My Thoughts on ThoughtFull by Dorena Williamson
In her charming and insightful book, ThoughtFull, author Dorena Williamson shines light on something we desperately need more of in our world; thinking of others and appreciating everyone’s differences, even our own. This delightful children’s book is a wonderful tool and conversation starter for teaching children to be more like Jesus as they relate to the world around them.
She tells a delightful tale of a young boy with Down Syndrome named Ahanu and how he received a special award at school for being thoughtful. Later that day, Ahanu’s friend, Joshua, is troubled when he overhears two boys making fun of his friend. Dorena Williamson walks the reader through a heart-warming story of how Joshua chooses to show his friendship for Ahanu.
As the parents of a special needs child, we are far too familiar with the lack of thoughtfulness so pervasive in our world today. From people staring and puling their kids aside to grownups making snide and hurtful comments, we have experienced it many times. Oddly enough, the most hurtful things often come from adults, not children. This book is sure to help the adult reader as well as the child on their journey to becoming more ThoughtFull.
l was particularly fond of the Parent Connection at the back. Not only is this a superb tool for helping parents engage their children, the tie to scripture gives a great start to a devotional, family conversation, or even church lesson time.
Author Dorena Williamson is a bridge builder, speaker, writer, and worship leader who knows the power and beauty of racial awareness. She and her husband, Dr. Chris Williamson, planted Strong Tower Bible Church in Nashville, Tennessee, and have spent more than twenty years ministering to its richly diverse faith community. Dorena and Chris have four children.
